Hi all,
I'm new to the forum, and relatively new to the world of bio and VO. I'm awaiting the arrival of my baby- a toyota 4 runner with an imported diesel 2L engine. My brother is currently working on putting the frankencar together, but I wanted to get the word out there to see if anyone has done anything similiar. I would like to convert to VO as soon as money allows, but am a bit overwelmed by all the info out there. Any advice is appreciated - experience with diesel toyotas and Pacific NW local an A+++.

Hi Juniper,

Forgive me if I missed it, who makes that 2L diesel you've imported and what year is it? That'll help in gleaning info specific to your situation.

Don't be overwhelmed, the basics are entirely manageable.

ssray,

where did you get the plate style heat exchanger and does it do a good job?

McMaster-Carr carries a nice one for ~$218. It's a lot bigger than the one in the picture and according to the manufacturer's data, it is more than sufficient for the task. I picked one up for my Dodge installation - I don't have it functional yet, but it mounts nicely in a confined space and should easily cover the heating needs.

Sadly not my conversion, the plate type exchanger is the same type they use in a combi gas boiler(domestic) in the uk, i think they are v efficent, have yet to get the time to convert yet.

Also used as a oil cooler in the Audi A4... Hate to say it but it is far too small for the job...I have two in my shop collecting dust for better than 2 years now.

The one pictured did look a little on the small side. They do make them much bigger - but the cost goes up as well. When you consider that they are used to cool ice rinks or heat pools efficiently, they do have a good range of capability. You just need to have one large enough for the task and push a high enough volume of heated coolant through to warm up the flow of VO. From what I understand, you can seriously drop the temperature of the coolant if you put a high enough volume of colder VO through it - maybe too much even! By design, they are very efficient.

After speaking with the manufacturers support staff, I went with one that should be larger than needed. It is still relatively small compared to any other option. I'll post results as soon as I get the fuel flowing through it. They do cost a little more than the alternatives - but their size makes installation easier.

you can find these exchangers in gas combi boilers in the uk,not my conversion, a lucky begger on the surf web in uk.
mines taking a lot longer, then she decides she may not like the truck any more

We have had a flat plate heat exchanger designed for us by a German company and have been testing it for 2 months now with very good results and it comes in at only 3" x 3" x 6.5" and has been specificaly designed for coolant and VO with known coolant and VO flow rates, a good deal smaller than what we presently have and we are now working on installing the temp sensor for the controller in the same unit assuring proper switch over.
