View Full Version : Poor idle on diesel, fine on VO

I have an interesting problem with my 300SD. First off, it runs just great on VO and idles smoothly and quietly (for this kind of engine). The engine runs normally when driving.

After a fillup on Saturday on Diesel it started to idle really poorly, at very low rpms and started to frequently die in idle. The first time this happened was when I put the car in drive right at the pump but I didn't think anything of it. Idle is now at maybe 600 rpm on diesel, around 800 on VO (eyeballed per tachometer). It also idles normally when the engine is cold.

When I checked the car over I noticed that the engine oil had gotten really low (below the low mark on the dipstick) by my negligence so I am a worried about damage I may have caused. The oil pressure was always ok, though. Besides topping off the oil I have changed the air filter and I will change the diesel fuel filter next.

Any ideas? Why would the idle have gotten so low suddenly. It would be a huge coincidence if a problem caused by the low oil or anything else would have shown up right after the fillup but it is possible, of course. Should I just burn off the remaining diesel and see what happens on the next tank full?

well first change the oil then look for the leak. if there is no leak then u may need a ring job or perhaps an oil flush. anyways u really need to figure out where the oil is going.

The oil leak isn't a fast one, it has been months (and the admission of neglect)... The engine is dripping a bit but nothing major.
