I ocasionally like to organize a car or motorcycle event (I'm also a licensed motorcycle road racer with CCS (Champion Cup Series)) and while tuning up the diesel it came to me...

I'd like to offer the 2005 bio-challenge; a 1/4 mile drag race for us greasers. The focus will be to spread the word of grease and advance the technology by sharing ideas with your fellow racers. The only rule is you must be running 0% petroleum fuel, bio or straight veggie only. As long as your car is street legal and inspected you'd be able to race, the track even supplies helmets.

I am tenatively planning it for late summer/early fall at Atco Raceway in central New Jersey. Trophies will be awarded, if there's sufficient interest I may be able to get some financial backing larger prizes as well. This would surely be a long drive for several so there will be a place for us to meet prior to the races to chat and show off our rides!

I will be charging nothing for this event however the track does charge an entry fee for all racers. I will provide more details in the near future but last time I raced there it was ~$20.

If you're interested please reply to this post or e-mail me at donniej (at) voicenet (dot) com.

I don't think my 6.2L NA motor is going to be worth much in the 1/4, if it runs a 20sec ET I would be suprised, but I'd be interested in checking out the event if it happens.

Is it going to be a heads up or a bracket competition? If bracket, I'll break out the practice tree now :)

If you let people run biodiesel, they'll be running 10% methanol- a petroleum product.

Then again, if you let people run Greasecar rigs, they'll have diesel in their VO tanks from purges.

The point of the race is fun, spreading the word about VO and to share ideas... we all know these cars are slow as piss :) 20 second 1/4 mile times will probably be respectable. If it will fit under their awning, my buddy will probably bring his Isuzu NPR 16' box truck powered by 2.5L 4cylinder...
I'll be happy if my BMW runs 17 with the waste gate zip tied shut  :)

About the fuel purity, there won't be lawyers involved and much will rely on the "Honor Code". I'll try to get a fuel analyzer but will allow room for methanol, diesel in the VO from backwash, etc...

LDPosse: What is a heads up or a bracket competition? I've only drag raced a few times and don't know the terminology...

Donniej -

Bracket racing is basically handicap racing. You put the time you think you can run on your windshield (dial-in) and you want to run as close as you can without going under. The car in the other lane does the same, and your starting times are staggered, so that if you both ran exactly what your dial-in says, you would both cross the finish line at the same time.

A great bracket racing primer on the web is www.staginglight.com and look under Racing Resources.

I'm planning to take my recently converted '85 Chevy with the 6.2L diesel to the track when it opens in March to see how it does. That's probably a bad idea, as a performance junkie like myself will be tempted to take the $$ I'm saving on fuel and put it towards a big 'ole honkin turbo :D HAHAHAHAHA
