View Full Version : Ever Wanna Stop the Collant Flow?

I'm planning a main tank conversion (VO in the main tank, startup/purge fuel in a second smaller tank), using coolant flow to heat, in order, a final heat exhanger, filter heater, HIH to the tank, then a tank loop ... then return to the radiator.
If, for any reason, I should ever want to run diesel in my main tank, would it be wise to plan the system so that the coolant flow can be stopped (ball valves?) so that I am not heating the diesel fuel?
Coolant would, of course, continue to circulate normally to cool the engine, but would not circulate through the VO heating system while diesel is in the tank.

yes dont use ball valves i put a heater cut off valve in line . got it from napa . dont know the part # but they have a book and you can get em straight ,bent , cable or vacuume opperated or just use your fingers under the hood

Yes that would be a good idea, however, coolant should to return to the radiator. Thewater pump circulates water through the engine at all times, hot coolant from the head is often diverted to pass through the heater core and return to the inlet side of the pump. This is done so that the heated water can be used right away for heat in the cabin. No water flows through the radiator until the thermostat has opened. If you draw your coolant for VO heating from the same source as the heater core, this system will be warmed up as the engine warms and be ready to switch over as soon as the engine is, if you draw it from the rad, the engine will need to be completely warmed up before ANY heat is sent to the VO system basicaly doubling the time required to switch over.

That was my intention, I just didn't say it like I have it in my head. I intend to T into the heat core supply/return.
Magyver, thanks for the tip. Just out of curiosity, why not ball valves?

well you price a ball valve and the fittings for it and then a heater cut off valve . and then a cut off valve gives you the option to open and close it from inside . like a choke cable .

I have also been thinking of a valve to shut off the flow of coolant to my heated veg tank for warm weather use, especially since I will have a coolant heated Davco 234 fuel processor installed next to the trunk mounted veg tank. It seems this would speed up the initial warm up time when fuel tank heating is unnecessary (I will be using a FRYBRID heat exchanger under the hood). When shut, the valve would stop coolant flow to the veg tank but still allow flow to the Davco unit. If the valve is mounted just to the coolant supply line at the veg tank, is this all I would need? i.e., there's no need for a shut-off on the coolant return also, is there? I'd much rather see the heat going to the heat exchanger than into the already liquid veg oil in the tank (in the summer). Any thoughts? Thanks.
