Has anyone got any insight on the conversion(ability) of this rig? Is the VP44 REALLY a problem? Another question...Right now I am only getting about 16-17mpg, 3/4 hwy-1/4 backroads, driving quite conservatively(the occasional Italian tune-up). Before doing the conversion, should I have the injector pump checked and calibrated and the injectors pop tested, etc? Anything else? I want the engine to perform as it should. For efficiency, economy and environment.

I'm wondering the same. I'm researching converting my 2001 24V Ram, but having no luck finding any details, or if it can safely be done.

It can be done. The main issue is that the VP44 Injection Pump is a known problem while running on diesel and even more suspect with SVO.
Most people stay away from the 24v for that reason. |

I've had my 99 Dodge 3500 converted for a year and have had no IP problems. YOU MUST be running a fuel pressure gauge right before the IP and YOU MUST shut down if the fuel pressure drops to about 2#. If you maintain good fuel pressure, I maintain 12 - 20# at all times and so far its seems to be working.

Hi Guys,
I'm brand new here, and have no mechanical inclination, but from a simple $ and cents standpoint, I also want to convert my 2001 Dodge 2500 Cummins. Diesel is up to $3.20 here in San Diego. Mind copying me on that info? Where can I find the info on the FRYBIRD kit? Since I'm way behind the learning curve, I would consider any bombardment of email as a favor. ![]() |
