Default Drain valve in 55 gallon plastic drum

What is the best way to install a drain valve in the side of a 55 gallon plastic drum? Want to install one in the side of the barrel about 4" from the bottom. Should I use a plastic valve or metal or does it matter? What is the best stuff to seal around the valve so it won't leak?

I used the cheap PVC irrigation fittings from HD and it's held up fine for the last two years.

The best sealant is aquarium-specific silicone caulking. I think I got it at HD as well.

Keep in mind I don't use heat, so if you're using heat, disregard my recommendation.

I will be using this barrel to catch the oil coming out of my centrifuge. I heat my oil to approx. 130f. So after it goes through my centrifuge the oil will go into this barrel & the drain valve will allow me to put the oil into smaller cubies. So the barrel won't see much heat.

Smile bulkead valves

I bought the grey plastic bulked valves at Mclendon hardware. I put one in the bottom of 55gal poly barrel and one 4'' up on side. I use 1/2'' for drains and 3/4'' on the side. I have 12 barrels set up this way. No leaks in 2 years. To get the nut inside the barrel I used a 3ft 1x1 stick with a wire hooked to it, wraped the wire around the nut, screw the fitting from the outside. has a gasket and used silicone.

What kind of silicone did you use? Just wondering what kind of silicone will stand up to VO.

Gasoila® Soft-Set Thread Sealant with PTFE

http://www.gasoila.com/products/item...twithptfe.html

I use a 3/4" or 1" NPT butress fitting from the irrigation store- ~ $12. It has a rubber washer and is not supposed to need a sealant but I goop it up with Gasoila® Soft-Set Thread Sealant with PTFE. I have several barrels at restaurants and my home filtering system sealed with this stuff. No leaks.

I'm using it on just about everything SVO related now.

Let it cure overnight before exposing it to oil is my only advice.

simone,

Me and a buddy have used polypropolene bulk head fittings with great success, the last 4 I ordered were part number 3736K3 $18.67 each.
