Ken I would love to check your system out. I just traded with George of utterpower.com, and my end is the 6HP single with a 5kw generator. That was last fall, and I have yet to build a place for it, break it down and check it out for things like casting sand. My plans are to first run it on biodiesel, but soon follow with a grease set up. I have yet to see, start and hear one run. I'll keep in touch! Mike

We have been running ours for only a month or so. However, seems like I can't leave good enough alone. The other day I was "Adjusting" things and over revved it. This caused the generator to burn out so right now we are down. I'll be buying a 15kw for George in a week or two and hope to be back up soon. These engines are just a kick to be around, once running they seem to mesmerize one. They are becoming quite popular. I was getting 4.5-5 hrs per gallon of fuel running a 10kw on mine. It never even barked when it was loaded down. I bet the 12kw will cause a bark or two. Thanks for the new thread, Maybe there are others out there with these engines? Ken

I love these gensets!
I have one client who wants to co-generate some serious electricity using wvo. Around 200 Kw. But their load is so variable that they will be forced to sell excess capacity (at a loss) to the local power co-op. Who frankly does not want it. So I suggested instead of running a huge multi cylinder diesel genset that overproduces power most of the time..how about a "bank" of listeroids? SAme number of cylinders...just the ability to take them off line one at a time as "load" changes. I also see the ability to work on them individually while not lowering peak output as a big plus. So I suggested installing eleven 20Kw listeroids instead of one 200 Kw Detroit. Their diesel mechanics thought I was crazy when I suggested it..but had "180°ed" by the end of my presentation. Still....just becasue they thought it was a sane idea does not mean it is. Anybody have some feedback here?? Negative preferred. The idea of having these relativly primitive engines hooked up to a computer for optimum efficiency is really pretty exciting to me. We will see what the client says after we run the numbers on this idea. Frankly I like the idea that we can buy one unit to test the idea..and then progressivly add others if it seems promising. Compared to the investment in a single 200Kw genset or two 100 kw sets the risk is much smaller. It would also seem to simplify installation, sound control, etc. |

Dana ... Has this project already begun? I was told of someone who purchased ten smaller Listeroids to run generators. In fact I tried to buy one and couldn't because they were all sold. Later I found the one I bought which is much bigger. What state is this project in? I've been considering such a project as well and would like to communicate with them about the rules and regulations (Pit Falls) of selling to the grid. Thanks for the input.

The project is in MN. And I would be the person to talk to since they are relying on me for info, research, and contact with the state. Frankly I have found that in areas where the utility is enthusiastic about buying power..or off loading peak demand they will even finance the gensets. And in areas where the utility is not enthusiastic...forget any co-operation at all. Despite what the state law may read...unless you enjoy beating your head against a wall don't even try in a an area where the utility only seems interested in NOT being helpful. |
