Yup, look for energy star appliances. They save significantly more money and will pay for themselves in short order.

Also, newer appliances are more sophisticated...and not compatible with some of the decade-earlier power factor correction devices. I wouldn't use one for my front loading washing machine that I bought in 2008. Today, washing machines use switching technology to control the motor direction and speed without a transmission. The electronics cost less than the transmission!

LED lighting is the up and coming thing, but a little pricey and perhaps not as reliable because the controlling electronics are more sensitive to failure than the LEDs. Wait for the technology to mature unless the price is so low it wouldn't matter.

That's my recommendation.

That's my recommendation.
As time passes LED lighting appears to be a great solution to saving energy. They are getting cheaper and more reliable each day, so in a few years i think that traditional lighting systems will become obsolete.
